The Costa Rican-American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham Costa Rica) was founded thirty five years ago by a group of Costa Rican and US business executives with a vision towards promoting and nurturing the bilateral commercial relationship between the United States and Costa Rica and on the principle that a strong private sector is essential to the country’s economic well being, and that a strong economy will strengthen its democratic principles.
Today’s AmCham organization consists of 400 companies and 1300 corporate representatives divided almost 50/50 between Costa Rican and US interests. This membership represents a widely diverse section of economic activity — agriculture, livestock, aquaculture, importers/ distributors, tourism, manufacturing, business services, construction and non-profit organizations. The Chamber’s membership represents 80% of Costa Rica’s foreign direct investment and 80% of the country’s exports.
AmCham Costa Rica has assumed an increasingly more visible and aggressive role on the national business scene and is recognized as an energetic advocate on behalf of the US business community. AmCham’s capabilities are strengthened by an impressive brain trust from within its active working committees. The Chamber’s expertise and views on investment, trade, legal, environmental and human resources issues in Costa Rica are sought after, listened to and respected.
In Washington DC AmCham Costa Rica is widely recognized for its ongoing advocacy efforts on behalf of its constituency where for the last 35 years the Chamber leadership has devoted considerable time to bilateral issues affecting trade relations between the two countries and in promoting trade related initiatives such as CBI enhancement and the Central American Free Trade Agreement with the United States and the Dominican Republic (DR-CAFTA)
AmCham firmly believes that CAFTA will have a tremendous positive impact on the social and economic development of the region and has devoted significant time and resources to ensure its ratification and successful implementation in Costa.
